Lithium-Ion Battery Model Tag Guidance
On November 19, 2025, the Department of State adopted new regulations to assist businesses in complying with New York State law that requires charging cords for micromobility devices, limited use motorcycles, and bicycles with electric assist to have a red safety tag attached. These regulations will take effect on January 5, 2026.
Micromobility devices, limited use motorcycles and bicycles with electric assist use lithium-ion batteries that store large amounts of energy in a small space and can catch fire under certain conditions. The safety tag requirement provides New Yorkers with highly-visible, critical information for fire prevention and response. By following the guidance provided on these labels, New Yorkers can contribute to fire prevention and react appropriately in an emergency, thus increasing their safety and the safety of others.
