Cemetery 101

Do you want to ensure long-term viability, and what best positions cemeteries for the future? Come hear about best practices from the experts!

The Department of State’s Division of Cemeteries is hosting Cemetery 101 courses across New York State.  We encourage cemetery officers, directors, and operators to attend one of the interactive trainings.  These trainings are designed to educate stakeholders on the basic aspects of successful cemetery operations and provide an opportunity to meet with Division staff and ask questions and gain insight into best practices.

Don’t see a training scheduled in your region? Call or email us if you have a suitable venue, and we will explore the possibility of adding a session near you. We can be reached at 518-474-6226 or [email protected].

Attendees are encouraged to RSVP as space is limited, but walk-ins are welcome provided we haven’t reached our capacity yet. We encourage you to print and bring a copy of the presentations found below to the training session if and when you attend.

Annual Financial Report Tutorials

All regulated cemeteries must file an annual financial report with the division within 90 days of the close of their fiscal year. Join us virtually for a page-by-page tutorial on how to complete the annual financial report, led by the Division’s accounting staff.

Watch the Annual Report Tutorial Video

These sessions are designed for the treasurer or officer/director that completes the annual report, but all cemetery officers, directors, and employees are welcome. We will leave time for questions at the end, but we encourage you to submit questions in advance to [email protected].  Please use “Annual Report Tutorial” as your subject line and include your cemetery name, 5-digit ID if known, and planned session date.

Check back for new dates soon.

An RSVP is preferred, but not required. Feel free to join more than one session. If you cannot join one of these sessions, please contact the Division at the above email or at 518-474-6226; if you have contact information for the accountant assigned to your cemetery, you may contact that accountant directly.
