About the Ramirez June Initiative

The ONA Ramirez June Initiative was created to support new Americans with intellectual and developmental disabilities (IDD) and their families in New York State. Our mission is to help affirm the dignity, value, respect, contribution, and worth of all New Yorkers with IDD by assisting new Americans with IDD and their families to connect with vital resources, information, and services.  


Goals of the Ramirez June Initiative  
  • Build the capacity of the Office for New Americans staff and community partners to assist new Americans with IDD and their families 
  • Conduct outreach and community engagement with new Americans and immigrant service providers in New York State 
  • Develop and distribute disability-themed resource materials  
  • Increase awareness for the identification and prevention of human trafficking of new Americans with intellectual and developmental disabilities 
  • Share strategies, promising practices, and lessons learned with the Developmental Disabilities Planning Council and other key stakeholders 
Inspiration

New American families who faced complex barriers to accessing resources and services for their loved ones with IDD in New York State inspired ONA and the DDPC to create the Ramirez June Initiative. The initiative is named after the Ramírez family and the family of Siewling (June) Lum, two new American families who live in New York State.
 

Collaboration

The Ramirez June Initiative is a collaboration between the NYS Developmental Disabilities Planning Council (DDPC) and the NYS Office for New Americans (ONA). 

The New York State Office for New Americans helps new Americans fully participate in New York State civic and economic life. We are committed to strengthening New York State’s welcoming environment for new Americans and facilitating their success by creating a network of neighborhood-based Opportunity Centers. 


The New York State Office for New Americans (ONA)  

The New York State Office for New Americans (ONA) was created in 2012 to welcome immigrants and to help them in achieving their American Dream. Through its statewide network of community-based providers, ONA assists all new Americans in accessing and navigating a variety of free services and supports their inclusion as an integral part of New York State’s diverse cultural fabric.


The New York State Council on Developmental Disabilities (CDD)

The mission of the CDD is to enhance the lives of New Yorkers with developmental disabilities and their families through programs that promote self-advocacy, participation, and inclusion in all facets of community life.

Voyage, a Multilingual Resource Book for Families

The ONA Ramirez June Initiative created Voyage a free, multi-lingual resource to help new American families with young children identify disabilities and get help early. Sign up to receive free copies of Voyage as well as informational material about the early identification of disabilities created by the CDC’s “Learn the Signs. Act Early.” mailed to you at no cost. Informational materials are available in English, Spanish, Chinese, Russian, Bengali, Haitian Creole, Korean, Arabic, Dari, Pashto, Ukrainian, and Somali.

Any immigrant that needs free legal assistance or immigration advice is urged to call the New Americans Hotline at 1-800-566-7636 9:00 a.m. to 8:00 p.m. Monday through Friday. All calls are confidential. Assistance is available in over 200 languages.
