Local Law Filing

Overview

Each local law shall be filed with the Secretary of State within 20 days after its final adoption or approval.  A local law does not become effective until it is filed in the Office of the Secretary of State.

How to File

  1. File a Local Law Filing
    1. Please refer to the instructions for completion and filing
  2. Each local law shall be filed on the form provided by the Department of State.
  3. The filing form shall contain entries for the title and number of each local law. Text of Local Law must be stated on an additional sheet and attached to the Local Law Filing Form. Such form shall also contain entries for other information as may be required by law. *If submitting multiple Local Laws it is recommended to mail all forms in one package to avoid any delay in processing.
  4. The Department of State will assign a Local Law number to the Local Law for indexing purposes. This number may be different from the number ascribed by the legislative body of the local government.
     
  5. The completed Local Law Filing must be forwarded to:
