Smart Growth Community Planning

Planning and development that creates livable, sustainable, and equitable communities.

OVERVIEW

Smart Growth is a forward-thinking approach to planning and development that supports and integrates four key themes: Equity, Economy, Environment and Energy/Climate. Funding is available through the Smart Growth Community Planning Program to develop or update comprehensive plans, area plans, or zoning codes to include ten Smart Growth principles. The Smart Growth principles guide and permeate all of the programs administered by the Office of Planning, Development & Community Infrastructure, including the Downtown Revitalization Initiative, NY Forward, Brownfield Opportunity Area, and Local Waterfront Revitalization Programs.  

HOW IT WORKS

Planning

Smart Growth planning assesses how the Department of State’s Smart Growth principles are currently reflected in the community and how to further integrate them into a long-term plan for growth and development.    

Zoning

Smart Growth zoning implements the strategies and recommendations in a community’s Smart Growth plan by developing and adopting land use regulations that implement the community’s plan.
